Blogs would be a great way to have an online/web journal. Students would be more excited about doing it on the computer than on paper...not to mention all the trees it would save.
Students and teachers could use free online blogging tools to enhance communication by using it as a reflection tool to various units of study.
Some great units of study to use with blogs are: reflections to books read, writing prompts, sharing problem solving strategies to difficult math problems, journal entries, discussions on social studies topics, sharing ideas for parties. The list could go on and on!
Blogs would give teachers and students a way of sharing their opinion on specific topics. It would give students a way to respect and think about other people's point of view.
Good units of study that blogs would work well with are sharing ideas for writing, listing current events, and journal writing.
I think blogs would be a great way to help students learn how to organize their thoughts and answer a question properly. They can learn things like restating the question as part of your answer and using nouns instead of pronouns in order to clarify what they are talking about. Learning these techniques would really help them be better prepared to explain themselves on the MAP test.
What a great way to get students excited about sharing their thoughts, especially if you set up some type of competitive element to how many blogs are sent. But that might not be a good idea either because they might send so many messages that really don't have substance to the message.
It would be great to use this to share thoughts and ideas on poetry, current events, predictions of what might occur for Science concepts, etc.
Classroom blogs would give the students a method of communication they would enjoy. Some shy students would be more likely to take part in discussions.
Blogs could be used with any unit of study. Journal entries would be more exciting.
Blogs would encourage nonreaders to read if they were going to be required to discuss a book via blog. I have book discussions where I have students read for a certain amount of time and then have a "Book Talk" about whatever book they are reading. My students ALL read dilgently when they know they are going to have to share. I think "Blogging" would work too!
Blogging is an excellent channel for development of writing skills which is so important for MAP testing. It can be used in all areas of study. I also believe it allows the teacher another resource for student assessment.
I think it would be beneficial for students to use in response to our morning meeting topics. Since everyone usually only gets one chance to respond to the topic, they would have the opportunity to present further discussion on the topic.
There would be many ways to use blogs in a classroom. Besides book studies, teachers could post question in social studies, science, or any other topic to check for understanding after a class lesson. I also think it could be used in developing the kids writing skills. Blogs could be done individually or in small groups thus increasing the kids communication/speaking skills as well as social/interactive skills. Another way teachers might use a blog would be to create a homework assignment. Current events and rules for the classroom could also be discussed in blogs. Surveys could be done in blogs. There are endless possibilities.
Kids are always ready to discuss current events. Instead of verbalilzing thoughts, opinions, emotions, etc., what a neat way for ALL to feel free to share!
I like the idea of having students comment about things being studied in class. I can see that this would work so that you could get everyone's opinion on different aspects of the class. They could tell you what they like and don't like.
A blog would certainly reinforce the concept of fact vs. opinion. Given a variety of scenerio, students could comment with opinions. I like that it would allow all students equal opportunity to comment.
Blogging would be wonderful for students to learn how to type on the computer while learning to edit, respond, and read others' comments. Although they cannot edit another peron's post, this could be a springboard for discussion. This also provides a "reason" for reading and writing for those low achievers who don't understand why they need to read and write.
Students need to connect the learning to some part of their life and trying to do this one by one orally can take a ton of class time. This would be a great way for everyone to be "heard" as they figure out how the topic applies to life as they know it.
Students could use blogging as a tool to reflect on things they learned from a speaker or presentation. This would share with teacher and other students, helping all remember.
