Start a parent discussion so parents can talk about concerns their child is having in your class. Keep in touch with students and parents over the summer and beyond. If students as they move on know they can always come back to your site and talk about their moves and accomplishments, I think several students would use that.
I knew of a family that used a blog to keep everyone updated when their critically ill baby was born. They posted daily medical updates and we all posted notes of encouragement.
College students (especially boys) who like being on the computer but don't like calling home and sharing could keep their mommas happy by blogging what is going on in college.
Some ideas would be a travel blog that you could share with others, especially nice if you were able to post photos. If you had a special interest you could also create a blog about that topic such as flowers or any other interest. How about family reunions? Everyone could post to it to update their family life. Also a good idea for class reunions.
I'm thinking of having this year's students write words of encouragement or things I wished I'd paid more attention to ..while taking the MAP this this year and sharing their thoughts with next year's class.
Parents could use the page to ask questions and the teacher would respond back. This might save the teacher having to answer the same question over and over again. Example: How much money does my child need to the field trip?
I can see how this could be used at the beginning of the year in place of that dreaded paper that teachers have students write about what they did over the summer. I think the teacher could give some ideas (perhaps include links and photos, etc.) of places they may have been and perhaps if it is going to relate to a place the kids will be studying that year the kids could comment on what they know or want to know - kind of like a KWL chart, only online.
Birthday party themes are a big deal to my children. (Birthday Express is a favorite magazine and magically appears in our mail box about 2 months before their birthday.) Each year we try to come up with a theme according to their current interests. Using a blog would be a great way to share party ideas with others.
I know of someone who went on a bike trip across the US. The lady's father followed them in a car and posted to a blog each day to let the family know of their travels.
My sister is moving to California with ther "rocker" boyfriend to start his new band and to fulfill her dream as a L.A. hairstylist. We could really keep in touch with this tool!
I like the idea of having students use it for students to answer questions and respond to classmates answers as well. It seems like a great way to encourage open discussion and will allow for students who don't feel comfortable speaking out in class, to contribute.
As a teacher, this could be used to allow students to provide input for their assignments or ask questions for tests. As an individual, I could create a blog to keep my sister, who lives out of state, up to date on what the rest of her family is doing here in Missouri.
I do many activities in my classroom that students get participation points for. I might have them post their response to the activity in order to receive their points.
I am teaching Human Nutrition next year at Drury, evening college and I was thinking about having a blog to have them post articles they have found about nutrition.
Seniors in high school could give their ideas about life after high school, college concerns, their aspirations/goals, communicate with others who are at the same point in their life, etc.

You could use it to journal a wedding or other family event. Then, those that can't attend still feel up to date on the activities that took place

Students would be able to leave comments on subjects they fill need to more time than what the teacher provided.
Teacher - this would be a quick way to collect information or to brainstorm lists from multiple classes.
